end of an era…

You may have noticed the Knitwords website is no longer. Things happen, technology changes and I can’t keep up! And when it’s over, it’s over! After all, it’s been 13 years since we published! We hadn’t  been able to update or make any changes to the website since 2012 - old programs and old systems that became obsolete. I was hoping I would be able to continue blogging here but we will see - my windows7 computer has blu-screened a couple of times - I have a new windows11 computer but all of the old programs I used for photos, charts and even word processing won’t work on the new one and I’m not into investing or learning new stuff!

Not sure if this is my final goodbye here but I am still at the email of knitwords@shaw.ca and am happy to help, answer questions and offer my books, magazines and patterns. Still knitting here…

Hi Mary Anne,
Hard to keep up with the tech. Here in San Diego, the covid thing, made us morph into a Zoom using Guild [MKGSD] and we get in touch with Demonstrators all over the world. If you could get some tecky person to help you could make videos. We still do an in person Seminar. And Demonstrators do a couple of
hours on Zoom. Some do a 2 day workshop on Zoom. If you ever felt like sharing your skills contact the Machine Knitters Guild San Diego. mkgsd.com
I would like to share this blog entry with the Guild since there are many
ladies who have attended your Seminars over the years and loved them.

Understandable how hard it can be to chase technology - for me I see the flat bed knowledge slipping from our society ever so quickly I’m grasping what I can on my own here in my area. I appreciate all that you’ve contributed to this craft and just wanted to share to request to not give up. We need to keep this craft in our future. Love to learn.

That last comment was from me - it posted anonymously

Could you start a Facebook page? There are many machine knitting Facebook groups - maybe someone who has one could help? So many who post there have said that they have dug out a machine they haven't used for years and started to knit again. I know you would be welcomed enthusiastically!

I hope you can continue blogging. I do enjoy the inspiration you provide. I also have problems keeping up with the changing technology. Just this morning I had another fit when Adobe Acrobat Reader would not allow me to print a pdf I had downloaded. Things used to work easily and smoothly and now they don't. Even Facebook, which I use a lot for machine knitting groups, does funny things such as jumping back 3 previous entries every time I comment on a posting. Facebook is not nearly as useful as the old Yahoo groups where we could have files and folders which could be alphabetized. I have joined a couple of mk groups which meet through zoom online monthly (Knitnatters and Techknitters groups) and which do charge dues.
Thank you for letting us know of your technology problems. I do hope this is not the end of your blog or online presence.

I agree that many guilds host Zoom meetings now, and you can be a highly sought-after presenter if you wish! And tech help need not be expensive or difficult to find these days. Younger folks know their stuff, and can probably help out, if you have the energy to head in that direction. And yes, I would follow you on Facebook, too. These are all great suggestions folks have come up with.

You have amazing ideas! I own all your magazines, and every pattern teaches me something. Take care.

To the Real MA:

I totally get your frustration with technology. Why can’t ‘they’ just leave things alone!?!

You’re inspiring words will be missed! I have been to many of your seminars - and always learned lots. I have been revisiting KnitWords and have started making plans for future knit garments :)

Happy knitting,
The Other MA

I am sorry to hear this, too, but I totally understand the problems with the computer stuff. Thankfully, I have my sons who get me through the stuff that I don't understand (which is a lot of it!) I agree that you should consider Facebook. It is not my favorite place, but it is accessible and I belong to several machine knitting groups there and I would definitely join. By the way, I STILL wear 2 sweaters that I knit from your designs-Take a Turn v-neck pullover and a shawl neck zip front cardigan with cables that I can not remember the name of. Really hope you find a way to continue-thanks for helping us this far.

I hope you can find a way to continue to keep in touch with us other MK’ers. I enjoy both your design approaches and your humour in the narratives. I think, at least from what I’ve seen, most info on MK is now on FaceBook and there are quite a few active groups and followers. I’ve also noticed that other Websites on knitting seem to be losing members but are renewed on FB- so I guess for a lot of people it is their new resource for info and sharing. It would still offer an opportunity for you to showcase and to blog your creative narratives . Best wishes in whatever you choose to do. I’ve enjoyed your info and posts.

I too have been to many classes over the years and think you are an incredible designer and teacher. I use my grandson to help with my tech questions with DAK and Garment Designer, and belong to 2 Zoom guilds that are regional. PLEASE make yourself available to teach Zoom classes! The San Diego group would be perfect for that.
One thing about your patterns and those in Knitwords: the garments do not go out of style! Thanks for all your contributions to the craft.
